The number thirteen: 西方人13是不吉利的數(shù)字，西方大多數(shù)旅館13號(hào)房，許多摩天大樓也13層。迷信與 基督教。在“最后的晚餐”（The Last Supper） 中，猶大第 13位入席的人，后來(lái)他背叛耶穌，13就被視為不祥之?dāng)?shù)。直到，人們?nèi)?3個(gè)人一起吃飯不吉利，某人會(huì)在年內(nèi)死去。

上文中的 knock on wood若直譯敲打木頭，中國(guó)讀者會(huì)覺(jué)得莫名其妙。英美迷信就不難理解了。在西方流行說(shuō)法：凡向別人夸耀，立刻敲打木頭，否則所夸耀的事物就會(huì)走向反面。上文中的位女士夸口說(shuō)前兩位老太太所說(shuō)的（健忘）問(wèn)題，并且立即敲了敲木頭，不讓夸口的事情走向反面，然而她卻忘記了剛剛敲了木頭，有人敲門(mén)，可見(jiàn)她的記性最糟糕。
